Lyme disease may be a topic of special interest to the entire country shortly. Here’s why:

The CDC estimates that only about 10% of Lyme cases are ever reported

Roughly 30,000 cases of Lyme disease where reported to the CDC in 2008

Two years prior, only 10,000 cases were reported, possibly indicating that the rate of transmission is growing

That means approximately 300,000 new cases of Lyme may have occurred in 2008 in the United States

If the rate of transmission remains the same, then approximately 30 million cases will occur in the USA over the next 100 years.

So if a young person lives a long life on the order of 100 years in the USA, there is a 10% chance he or she will get Lyme (30 million out of 300 million). Furthermore, the rate of transmission is increasing. It may have tripled in just two years! Could that make that 10% into over 50% or more? Also, many Lyme disease experts believe that Lyme is already ten times more prevalent than the CDC believes. Redo these estimations with those numbers! Perhaps in the coming years, could that implicate most of the US population? Lyme disease can easily become debilitating. This is so much so, that suicide is a leading cause of Lyme related death.

Aside from the fact that the disease can be debilitating, and that it has become an epidemic, there are two other serious issues:

Even amongst knowledgeable Lyme disease health care practitioner’s, this disease is extremely difficult to treat. Many will say it is actually the most difficult of any infectious disease to treat. It often involves many concurrent conditions, as well as accompanying coinfections.

The IDSA (the “experts” on infectious disease) does not acknowledge even the existence of chronic Lyme disease. Doctors all around the country are standing up to legal pressure, and often losing their license for treating patients with the illness.

Hopefully, you can see that this is an important issue that the medical community cannot afford to remain ignorant about much longer. Lyme disease is perhaps the most misdiagnosed illness there is. It often gets passed off as chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and literally dozens of other illnesses. Many (if not most) Lyme disease sufferers go for many years without being properly diagnosed (if ever at all). By this time, the disease has usually become chronic, and is infinitely more difficult to treat.

The good news is that there are dozens of wonderful treatments for the illness. The bad news is that most doctors are currently ignorant about the disease, its diagnosis, and its treatment.

Lyme disease is one of the biggest catastrophes deluging the world and there is a marked lack of awareness. To make it worse, the Infectious Disease Society of America are far from helping the situation. In 2006, and IDSA panel upheld the view that chronic Lyme disease does not exist. But in 2007 an antitrust settlement started by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal demonstrated significant conflicts of interest among the panel members. They were found to have commercial interest in diagnostic tests, vaccines, and insurance. It was also demonstrated that scientific evidence and opposing views were suppressed from the panel. The settlement forced the IDSA to review the guidelines yet again, and in 2010 they have yet again unanimously ignored science. Their decision sets an international precedent that doctors should not treat chronic Lyme patients, and that they should not be allowed to prescribe long term antibiotics.

Aside from ample proof of the existence of chronic Lyme disease, members of the IDSA review panel itself have been caught flip-flopping. Here is one of several humorous quotes from members of the panel:

“These chronic neurologic abnormalities began months to years after the onset of infection, sometimes after long periods of latency, as in neurosyphilis…The likely reason for relapse is failure to eradicate the spirochete…with antibiotic therapy. This last article is one of many studies that show continuing symptoms are most likely due to persistence of the spirochete.” (1)

Somehow, members of the panel managed to catch amnesia and forget that they already knew chronic Lyme was real.

In 2006 the CDC reported 10,000 new cases. In 2008 that number tripled to 30,000. The CDC says that only about 1 in 10 cases are ever reported. So in 2008, that means the CDC estimated 300,000 new cases. They also estimate 1.8 million total cases in the USA. But some Lyme experts state that the CDC is off by yet another factor of 10, and that the true Lyme count is closer to 18 million cases! That is 1 in every 17 Americans! If the rate of transmission continues to increase, it would not be any stretch of the imagination to see the vast majority of the US population becoming infected. Some experts already believe this is the case. Transmission can occur through ticks, but there is evidence that it can also be transmitted through mosquitoes, fleas, other insects, cats, birds, sexual intercourse, saliva, from mother to the womb, and even to a small degree by airborne transmission.

Lyme disease is a misnomer. It is better called “Lyme Complex”. When people suffer from chronic Lyme, they can also suffer from numerous complications. These include other serious infections such as bartonella, babesia, mycoplasma, erlichia, and Chlamydia, as well as other conditions such as KPU (kryptopyrroluria), heavy metal toxicity, mold toxicity, food allergies, biofilm, hypercoagulation, methylation dysfunction, Candida, and more. Just trying to “kill the bug” is usually not curative.

If 1 in 17 people really do have Lyme, then we all owe it to ourselves to be aware of the symptoms and know that there may be an infectious cause to our vague problems. It is easy to think that someone is “just a jerk” or is “just lazy” or that it is “all in the head”, but in fact, many such people are actually suffering from toxins and inflammation in their brain and body from an infection. Depression, ADHD, OCD behavior, bipolar disorder, violence, rage, abnormal sexual craving, anxiety, panic, brain fog, concentration difficulties, irritability, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and arthritis are some of the most common manifestations of Lyme. Be aware of Lyme disease and prevent it if you can.

It is heartrending to see that the IDSA has knowingly helped to spread a plague of ignorance about a disease that is harming many millions around the world.

An estimated 26.2% of adults in the U.S. suffer from one or more “mental disorders”. Roughly 6% (1 in 17) suffer from a “serious mental illness”. Such epidemic rates of mental illness have already been well associated with chronic Lyme infections, which some Lyme experts estimate infect 1 in 17 Americans as well. Now another chronic infection known as bartonella is becoming highly implicated. Though there are many ways to get the infection, domesticated cats may be the largest vector.

Humans often contract both Lyme and bartonella (and other infections) in the same bite from an insect, scratch from a cat, etc. Bartonella is usually referred to as a “coinfection” of Lyme. Dr. James Schaller, a leading bartonella researcher, believes that bartonella may be more common than Lyme and that it may be more appropriate to consider Lyme as the coinfection. Dr. Schaller states:

“…the routine testing done at routine labs and even some specialty labs misses this infection routinely. There are just so many species that some labs are giving up looking for Bartonella at the species level, and are going to try PCR at the larger genus level. It is amusing to read that 40-60% of USA cats carry this infection, when this is based on junk lab testing. The numbers are much higher in my opinion.”

An astounding 34.7 million Americans own at least one cat. Infected cats can expose their own household as well as neighboring households. Fleas can also carry the infection from cats to humans. It is easy enough to see that the entire U.S is at risk for contracting bartonella.

Like Lyme disease, bartonella can cause virtually any illness. An abridged list of possible signs and symptoms include:

All psychiatric disorders, numbness or loss of sensation, dizziness, headaches, tremors, irritability, agitation, aggression, impulsivity, oxygen deprivation, panic attacks, fainting, muscle spasms and/or weakness, joint pain, upper and lower G.I. tract disorders, kidney, bladder, and urogenital disorders, fatigue, sleep disorders, memory problems, drowsiness, lumps in the skin, many types of rashes, polyps in or on major organs, ocular disorders, e.g., blurred vision, depth perception, and retinal damage.

In any mental disorder bartonella should be a suspect. A serious indication that someone may be suffering from the disease is when an observer can see that a person “just isn’t the same as he/she used to be”. The personality can change over the course of years and become inexplicably negative, pessimistic, confrontational, disagreeable, irritable, anxious, depressed, narcissistic, etc.

Dr. Schaller gives many anecdotes about patients who have suffered from bartonella.

A married couple was about to divorce, but after treatment for bartonella could no longer imagine what they were about to do.

A mother could not think clearly or stop drinking and accidentally let her baby drown. She recovered after treatment for bartonella.

A man needed heroin just to “feel right”. He got off all drugs after treating bartonella.

A man would intentionally go to a bar just to pick fights. His generally rude behavior got him fired. He was diagnosed with bartonella.

A pastor’s wife got a “flu” and needed antidepressants ever since. She started swearing. She stopped all medications and recovered her personality after treating bartonella.

A happy priest suddenly started getting depressed. After trying many treatments, he committed suicide. His blood tested positive for bartonella.

A man adopted two kittens. Two months later he inexplicably and severely assaulted his girlfriend. He had bartonella.

No one likes to hear gloom and doom. But the fact is that bartonella is an epidemic that is behind millions of illnesses, especially “mental” illnesses. Since when does 1 in every 4 people have a “mental disorder”?
