Cancer CAUSES Alkaline pH (Why Alkalizing May Not Make Any Sense)

Many people have heard that alkalizing therapies fight cancer like there’s no tomorrow. Though there are clinics that anecdotally say it works, there are also scientific studies that cast doubt on the safety of “alkalizing” for the treatment of cancer, and suggest that cancer patients may actually benefit from “acidifying” therapies.

Cancerous tumors are acidic. But a generally unknown fact is that for a time, cancer patients naturally develop blood that has alkaline pH. In 1928 a cancer researcher named Reding found that the blood of untreated cancer patients has a high pH; and that the elevated pH habitually persists after removal of the tumor (1). Reding was perhaps the first person to actually prove that cancer has an underlying physiology. This physiology is why even if you remove the cancer surgically there is roughly a 50% chance of recurrence. The underlying causes have not been addressed.

Research done at the University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia General Hospital showed that the average pH of 26 untreated cancer patients is 7.44, which is considerably more alkaline than the expected average from a healthy population (2). They also found that the degree of alkalinity is closely related to the prognosis (where higher pH means worse prognosis). A normal blood pH ranges from 7.420 to 7.440 (3). Remember that these numbers in no way translate into urine or saliva pH.

Tumors are locally acidic because many cancers produce excessive amounts of lactic acid. The body tries to protect itself by alkalizing, but it only has so much alkaline reserves to do this with. As these reserves run out, late stage cancer patients will develop acidic pH in the whole body.

One modern clinic which promotes alkalizing for cancer warns that for a time you might pass through an alkaline range that actually makes cancer grow faster (4). This observation was also made in the 1930′s by a cancer researcher named Fischer-Wasels. He found that alkaline blood stimulated cancer metabolism. In an alkaline medium he also found that glycolysis, cell division, and growth energy of tumors were stimulated. (5)

Results like these prompted Dr. Willy Meyer and several other doctors to treat cancer by intentionally making blood more acidic. They did this by giving IV injections of HCl (hydrochloric acid) at a 1:500 dilution usually in 10cc doses. These doctors had uniformly good results, with no sign of toxicity. Their work is recorded in the book “Three Years of HCl Therapy”.

This evidence suggests that cancer patients may in fact be too alkaline as opposed to too acidic. Perhaps people should say that cancer is “locally acidic” only at the tumor sites? Perhaps slightly alkaline blood accelerates cancer, but at some point, very alkaline blood begins to inhibit cancer?

So if you want to alkalize for cancer, then perhaps you better go all out and quickly get passed a possibly dangerous alkaline range and into a higher alkaline range. What does that exactly mean? It’s hard to say unless you have a doctor that can regularly measure your blood pH for you and knows how high you need to get to get out of the “danger zone” . No doctor on earth claims that cancer has a “magic bullet”. So why not throw things at cancer from as many directions as possible? There are many other aspects of cancer physiology beyond just pH.

Perhaps the supposed success of alkalizing protocols may actually be due to other confounding variables introduced by consuming baking soda, besides altering pH. Perhaps baking soda kills cancer in some other way not related to pH? Perhaps the distribution of alkaline material in the body plays a role It’s not a black and white thing. It’s not like “the tumor has pH of XXX and the blood has pH of XXX”. Say for example you ingest baking soda and for a very short amount of time, that baking soda makes just the outer layer of a cancer tumor extremely alkaline. The distribution of baking soda definitely matters. It is admitted that oral baking soda is used only because doctors that will inject tumors directly with baking soda are not commonly available. In other words, the explanation of why “alkalizing” therapies may work I believe to be far too simplistic. But if something can be proven to work, then the reason why it works is a distant concern.

And for those who would alkalize, a protocol people have anecdotally used as part of a comprehensive program is to:

    • Take 1 tsp of baking soda in a cup of water 8 times a day.
    • Do not do if there is edema or ascites.
    • An alternative is 15 to 20 drops of fresh squeezed lemon juice in each cup of water.
    • Take salivary pH first thing upon waking.
    • Get it up to 7.4 as quickly as possible and keep it above that.

It seems perhaps both acidifying and alkalizing therapies may have something to offer cancer patients. I think that more evidence is needed before alkalizing therapies should be touted as heavily as they already are. I hope they really are as useful as people claim, but can’t be sure at this point. If anyone has evidence of the effectiveness of alkalizing, please share it here.

    Updates June 25, 2011:

    - Just to clarify, there are some anecdotes (and I have heard of some also) of oral bicarb remitting tumors. But this does not show that it is helpful for everyone, or explain how it works for sure.
-Dr. Simoncini infuses tumors directly with bicarbonate. He is having good success but is not nearly remitting everyone. If that is the case, don’t believe anyone who says oral bicarb is a cure all. Also, note that Dr. Simoncini has stated that though he has guesses how his bicarbonate therapy works, he does not believe it is due to alkalizing.
-Cesium therapy is an alkalizing therapy that does seem to work, but is has real risks and needs to be closely monitored
-A Dr Waltraut Fryda reports on an alkalizing therapy that is done by introducing an acidic substance called dextrorotatory lactic acid. This illustrates my point about the distribution of pH within the body being key.

      1. Interesting analysis…
Instead of discussing, here is a story, a testimonial by somebody who used Baking Soda with black strap molasses to cure bone cancer. I found it yesterday thru:

Hi Zalman. Sugar may help target things to cancer cells. The premise of IPT (insulin potentiation therapy) is to use insulin (which is analagous to sugar in this case) to target drugs to cancer cells. Here is something else I found:

        Developing New Sugar-Coated Cancer Drugs
At Johns Hopkins University, a group of researchers looked at ways to fool cancer cells into growing more slowly and then eventually killing themselves. They studied abnormal glycosylation – how cancer cells put sugar and proteins together to sustain themselves. When these cells were given n-butyrate (a salt) with carbohydrates (contains sugar), cell proliferation slowed down. In order to feed the cancer a death-dealing drug, they produced a hybrid molecule made of a simple sugar and n-butyrate. Because the cancer cells absorbed the sugar readily, they soaked up this new molecule, which interfered with their ability to keep growing, and they died.

It seems sugar may help target cancer cells. Whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks is unclear.

      3. [...] 11/25/2010: It isn’t actually that simple. Alkalizing can actually be counterproductive if done incorrectly. Acidifying therapies may also be helpful at times. The whole understanding of [...]

      4. ok here is a snack food which contains everything alakline mentions in alkaline food list, its called natures valley crunchy ( the oat and honey, almond and the maple flavor only) if you read the ingredients it has all the cancer fighting ingredients ( sodium bicarbonate, mollasses, maple syrup and almond) and it taste good too if you dont want to take mollases or baking soda on its own). It should be available in any shops or supermarkets like asda sainsburys or wall mart. Dont buy the fruit flavour because this particular flavour conrains bad sugars.

i tried one of them and broken it all in my mouth mixing it with my saliva and then spat some out onto a PH level paper strips and it turned very dark green to PH level of 8 to 9, i also tried saliva on its own and my saliva was 6 Ph level.

ph paper testing strips can be found on ebay very cheap price

        google it “natures valley crunchy”

      5. on natures valley website the ingredients will be be different because it has not beeen updated on their website but vurrently the ones sold in stores will have the above mentioned ingredients and it is the crunchy range of “natures valley”

      6. hey author, STFU!!!! just cuz you can’t comprehend the simplicity of cancer cells dying in ph levels of 8.5 and higher doesn’t mean it’s not true and this simple wonderful cure should be widespread but instead people will find your dopey article while trying to do some simple google research. do us a favor and stfu, you look like you’re working for the government with your bs

        Hi Karen,

Dr. Simoncini himself says that pH is not the reason his baking soda therapies work much of the time. He suspects it does something to the surface of the tumor (fungal tendrils) to allow the immune system to better recognize the cancer and start killing it.

Dr. S. does not claim his baking soda therapy cures anywhere near 100%, and he is dumping it directly into arteries that feed the tumors…a far more effective way than oral bicarb. Just because a certain pH kills cancer in vitro does not mean it is that easy to get those conditions in vivo at the site of the tumor. I also know other doctors that use bicarb on patients and are not reporting crazy cures. It just isn’t a slam dunk. That said, there are some reported remissions here and there from oral bicarb.

And if your whole body reached 8.5pH…you’d be dead.

The moral of the story is use oral bicarb if you’d like, but don’t stop there. Use it synergystically with as many things as possible.

      8. This is just to let you know that we are starting drinking solution containing 2 g KHCO3 5 times per day testing saliva pH every morning. First morning pH was 5.5, second one – 6.0 (the accuracy of our measurments using pH paper is 0.5). Moreover we are trying to use many other natural anticancer food ingredients.
Unfortunately we do not have any other options currently available to slow down (minimum goal) or to stop (maximum goal) this unfortunately advanced pancreatic cancer. So we are interested if anyone out there currently has the same questions and may be with some real answers? It may be worth to know if anyone out there has some better ideas or real results.

      9. Let me inform you about my practical experience regarding taking KHCO3 attempting control acidic pH of saliva (body fluid). As far as I got it human body controls pH of blood as it is essential for survival (the range of pH for blood is more narrow compare to pH of body fluid including saliva). So before taking KHCO3 my saliva pH was around 5.5. Also my urine pH was around 5.0. After taking around 3 g three times per day during several days my saliva pH was fluctuating between 5.5 and 6.5 but my urine pH has get as high as between 8.0 and 9.0. As soon as I observed these data my conclusion was that my body start to remove alkali salts, as very high level of these salts can lead to serious problems resulting in high chances developing ascites. I guess this can lead to death if the level of salt input is higher then the level of salt output. If you would like to continue with this it would be wise to try doing this under expert control monitoring the level of varoious cations and anions to see if your output system can cope with this as well as if this can considerably decrease de-novo production of lactic acid from glucose originated from food carbs. However, my current view based on what I have observed is that this kind of treatment can be damaging for health even for such food grade chemical as KHCO3. I can not comment regarding usage of CsCl, as I will never try that due to obvious for me reasons.

Thanks for that Vlad. It is very important for people to know that some of these treatments that get repeated as magic cures on the internet, really are not so black and white. I hope you find what you are looking for.

      11. U are sadly mistaken. Dr. Simoncini says that he is 98 percent successful treating cancer with baking soda by injected directly on the cancer cell. U can even youtube him injecting the sodium bicarbinate into the cancer and it shrinks on contact. Ph really does work. There was a nobel prize doctor that discover this in 1931. Cancer cells go through a ferminatation process to produce lactic acid, which destroy the dna of the cell to properly replicate, thus, cancer forms. Lower a healthy cells Ph under a microscope and u will see it will turn into a cancer cell. Also, there is no proof that taking sodium bicarbonate by mouth will work because the body will break down the contents when absorbed.

        Hi Tayzer,

This is what Dr. Simoncini himself writes on his own site:

“If the fungus is sensitive to the sodium bicarbonate solutions and the tumour is smaller than 3 cm, the success rate will be around 90%. For terminal cases in which the patient is in reasonable good condition, 50%, and for terminal patients just a small percentage. ”

This contradicts your claim, which is lacking a source. The results Simoncini writes here are a far cry from a cure all.
