9 Natural Keys to Digestive Health

Many in the natural health world have heard the expression that the “gut is god”. It is the main point of entry for nutrition and toxins alike. Allergens and infections also make their way “down the hatch”. Systemic diseases often start with imbalances of the digestive system, and systemic diseases are often reversed by furnishing the digestive system with needed remedies, so that it can assimilate them and use them throughout the body. It is therefore very important to have good digestive health. Here are 9 items that natural health practitioners use for digestive healing:

    1. Digestive enzymes

Fresh fruits and vegetables (“living” foods) are rich in enzymes that the body uses to completely digest food. But with diets full of processed and “dead” foods, the enzyme content is often destroyed. Not having sufficient enzymes can lead to poor assimilation of food, digestive complaints, and food allergies. As people age, the body’s ability to produce enzymes also declines.

    2. Betaine HCl

Supplementing with stomach acid can also aid in the complete breakdown of food. Stomach acid levels also decrease with age. Stomach acid is also important in neutralizing pathogens that enter through the mouth.

    3. Antifungals / Antimicrobials

Many unwanted bugs can colonize the gut. They can damage the intestinal lining causing leaky gut, create toxins, cause allergic responses, and compete with healthy gut flora. The most common unwanted guest is Candida. Coconut oil, oregano oil, and cat’s claw, are some of the many remedies that can help rid the intestines (and the body) of intruders.

    4. Biofilm Busters

More and more recent research is showing that many pathogenic organisms are able to resist antimicrobials and evade the immune system by developing a biofilm (a sticky goop coating they protect themselves with). The best way to disable a biofilm is currently a hot topic in infectious disease. Some options include lumbrokinase, nattokinase, serrapeptase, other systemic enzymes, polysaccharide specific enzymes, chelation, essential oils, and even rife machines.

    5. Probiotics

Friendly bacteria help heal the mucosal lining, compete with foreign pathogens, detoxify, digest food, and strengthen the immune system.

    6. Intestinal lining healers

Leaky gut develops when undigested proteins leak out of the intestines and the body produces unwanted immune reactions against them, causing tiny “explosions” in the intestinal lining. This makes the pores in the lining larger and larger in a vicious cycle. Infections like Candida can also directly damage the membrane. Slippery elm, L-glutamine, butyric acid, aloe vera, and many others can help to heal the intestinal lining.

    7. Avoiding food allergies

Identifying food allergies can be a difficult task. Many protocols and lab tests can help. Eliminating them from your diet can sometimes produce miraculous changes. The body may also be treated to lose sensitivity to allergens in ways such as NAET, low dose antigen therapy, homeopathy, leaky gut programs, heavy metal chelation, and removal of chronic infections.

    8. Healthy diet

A healthy diet will contain enzyme rich foods that are unprocessed and “living”. Avoiding additives, toxins, preservatives, GMO foods, and pesticides are important factors. Cutting out sugar and red meat will help to starve Candida overgrowth and prevent sluggish and toxic bowels.

    9. Intestinal cleansing

Compacted matter, toxins, and even pathogens can be removed by the occasional intestinal cleanse. Bentonite clay, activated charcoal, pectin, flax seed, and chlorella are some examples of remedies that can help with this.

Some supplements and brands are a lot better than others. But if you can do it diligently, many strange and unexplained intestinal (as well as systemic) disorders can in fact be addressed by these 9 points.

      3. Probiotics is getting more and more popular. I even saw some ad with Jamie Lee Curtis on it talking about yogurt. based on my experience, probiotics do help our body, but it’s important to keep in mind the source of where you get probiotics. There are yogurt that do have probiotics, but is also very sugary. Me, i stick to plain yogurt, greek yogurt, kefir, and good ol’ supplements (if I don’t have the time to eat those foods). Here’s a good resource about probiotics : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neHbUI2JiPw

Dr. Mercola’s brand is a repacking of Swanson 66 billion. Buy from Swanson. Much cheaper.
