Lyme Disease Epidemic and New Book

Lyme disease is a topic of special interest to me, because I have it. I will certainly write a great deal about Lyme disease in the future, but for now let me give some motivation as to why this is such an important topic:

  • Roughly 30,000 cases of Lyme disease where reported to the CDC in 2008
  • Two years prior, only 10,000 cases were reported, possibly indicating that the rate of transmission is growing
  • The CDC estimates that only about 10% of Lyme cases are ever reported
  • That means approximately 300,000 new cases of Lyme may have occurred in 2008 in the United States
  • ILADS estimates that the level of disability experienced by a chronic Lyme disease sufferer is equivalent to that of a person who just recently suffered a heart attack
  • If the rate of transmission remains the same, then approximately 30 million cases will occur in the USA over the next 100 years.

So if a young person lives a long life on the order of 100 years in the USA, there is a 10% chance he or she will get Lyme (30 million out of 300 million). Furthermore, the rate of transmission is increasing. It may have tripled in just two years! Could that make that 10% into over 50% or more? Also, many Lyme disease experts believe that Lyme is already far more prevalent than the CDC believes. Perhaps in the next 100 years, could that implicate most of the US population? Lyme disease can easily become debilitating. This is so much so, that suicide is a leading cause of Lyme related death.

Aside from the fact that the disease can be debilitating, and that it has become an epidemic, there are two other serious issues:

  • Even amongst knowledgeable Lyme disease health care practitioner’s, this disease is extremely difficult to treat. Many will say it is actually the most difficult of any infectious disease to treat.
  • The IDSA (the “experts” on infectious disease) does not acknowledge even the existence of chronic Lyme disease. Doctors all around the country are standing up to legal pressure, and often losing their license for treating patients with the illness.

Hopefully, you can see that this is an important issue that the medical community cannot afford to remain ignorant about much longer. Lyme disease is perhaps the most misdiagnosed illness there is. It often gets passed off as chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and literally dozens of other illnesses. Many (if not most) Lyme disease sufferers go for many years without being properly diagnosed (if ever at all). By this time, the disease has usually become chronic, and is infinitely more difficult to treat. I myself took somewhere between 8 and 20 years to find out.

The good news is that there are dozens of wonderful treatments for the illness. The bad news is that most doctors are currently ignorant about the disease, its diagnosis, and its treatment.

New Lyme Disease Book

Connie Strasheim has written a new book on Lyme, and I think it is right on the mark. It details the treatment protocols of many successful Lyme health care practitioners. There is no theory about it. This book is about results straight out of clinical practice. If you have Lyme disease, this book is probably one of several good places to start:

  1. It is very important that the scientific community get their collective heads around the idea that Lyme disease is real and is something that is worthy of investigation. Given that we understand it so poorly, much more effort must be applied in gaining knowledge regarding the condition and at least ensuring we understand how much it is affecting society.
