Get Rid of Your Chronic Pain!!!- Part 5 of 5

Hopefully, by now I have at least made you interested in confirming for yourself that prolotherapy is in fact a tremendously effective treatment for chronic painful conditions. Working from that point of view, we must acknowledge that it has yet to become widely known. Let’s brainstorm on how to change that.

Popularizing Prolotherapy

In the age of internet, doing things such as blogging can be an effective method of spreading general education on the subject. That is what I am trying to accomplish here. Though we are not experts, making many thousands (if not millions) of people knowledgeable about prolotherapy will certainly increase demand enough to move prolotherapy forward.

Making Prolotherapy Profitable

Prolotherapy is very inexpensive. There are no expensive medications involved and no expensive equipment to buy. It involves simply giving a patient injections of an inexpensive solution. Who would profit by trying to popularize prolotherapy? Let us look at four parties involved:

Patients:
Patients will certainly profit from prolotherapy by resolving their chronic pain. They must therefore play a key role in advocating prolotherapy, and putting pressure on the medical system to spread prolotherapy.

Doctors:
Doctors are for the most part not aware that prolotherapy could actually make them a lot of money. Right now, a doctor may get some money from a patient coming in for an office visit. If instead of prescribing the patient a pain killer, the doctor could give the patient prolotherapy, and get some additional income, instead of a pharmaceutical company. You would think this would be a no-brainer, but for some reason, in general doctors appear to have a marked lack of enthusiasm for learning prolotherapy.

A common story of prolotherapists is that they successfully relieve a patient of their jaw pain (TMJ pain). The patient goes back to their dentist (who is often the health care professional people see for jaw pain), and the dentist is amazed that the pain is gone! The prolotherapist is not surprised however that the dentist never calls their office to ask how they solved the patient’s pain.

I was helped tremendously by prolotherapy, and reported the success to my primary care physician. He said, “That’s great.” He was happy I solved my pain, but expressed no interest at all in learning more about prolotherapy, even though he had failed for months to be able to help me with my chronic pain.

I also called my pain specialist at the time, and told him I was going to stop seeing him, because I was better. I never heard back from him.

Doctors can make money by learning prolotherapy. Not to mention they can actually start solving their patient’s pain for a change. One speculation for why doctors don’t take interest in prolotherapy is that there is a genuine lack of sincere desire to heal their patients. Another speculation is laziness. A third speculation is that doctors are too swamped with their daily grind, trying to get though all the patients they have, to have time to really do something new. They are too busy locally optimizing their practice to realize that they could be globally optimizing their practice.

There are already plenty of doctors with offices set up that specialize in pain. If they could be targeted, there would be no problem with overcoming problems in infrastructure when spreading prolotherapy. Yet for some reason, these doctors don’t seem enthusiastic as whole. This places more burden on patients to spread the news about prolotherapy.

Insurance Companies:
Insurance companies are dishing out big bucks paying for prescription pain medications. They should certainly be able to profit by permanently solving patients pain with a set number of times expense, like prolotherapy. Yet for some reason, most insurance does not cover prolotherapy. In this case, it seems these companies must truly not be convinced at the efficacy of prolotherapy. As I alluded to on part 1 of this article, it took Mayo Clinic 50 years to acknowledge prolotherapy! And they are supposed to be set up in a way that minimizes profitability biases. It seems for some systematic reason, our medical community is just simply slow to learn anything new.

Pharmaceutical Companies:
Pharmaceutical companies are the only parties that could stand to lose money as a result of popularizing prolotherapy (as far as I can tell, anyway). So there can certainly be resistance expected in that regard.

Overall, it appears the patients will have to be the biggest advocates for prolotherapy, for the time being.

Getting Creative with Money

What if we got the NBA involved. You heard me. What if Kobe Bryant could extend his NBA career by three years if his knees were kept in top shape with prolotherapy? What if he mentioned it to the interviewer on national television right after scoring 45 points in a game? I know of some NBA players who have successfully done prolotherapy. And there is certainly a lot of money involved in sports. If people heard that NBA players were getting prolotherapy and recovering from their injuries, then that could really stir up the pot. One of you smart people ought to make it happen.

Naturopathic Doctors

Naturopaths are far more likely to take notice of alternative treatments than main stream doctors are. I know ND’s in the USA and Canada who practice prolotherapy. ND’s can be another effective outlet for the spread of prolotherapy.

Difficulties with Researching Prolotherapy

The gold standard in research is the double blind, placebo controlled study. This is simply impossible to do with prolotherapy. On one hand, it is a challenge to control for the skill of the physician. One might say that only one physician could be used in the study then? Well, what if you get a mediocre prolotherapist? Then you will get mediocre results.

Also, injecting a patient with a placebo is not possible. The effect of needling an injured area itself causes inflammation, and has a proliferation effect.

As is, modern medicine may never be totally satisfied with studies of prolotherapy. That is why our paradigm of research is flawed.

Research Versus Clinical Experience

Which would you rather have:

1. A treatment that has been thoroughly researched and shown to improve chronic pain by a small amount?
2. A treatment that has not been thoroughly researched, but has anecdotal experience of tens of thousands of people being freed of their pain, and only and handful of people ever having negative complaints about the therapy?

The modern medical community hardly even listens to number two. Though there is a matter of personal opinion here, I personally think it is insane not to pick number two over number one.

Journal of Prolotherapy

There is however, a medical journal devoted to prolotherapy. It’s called The Journal of Prolotherapy.

Books

There are some books on prolotherapy, mostly written by Dr. Ross Hauser.

Finding a Prolotherapist

There is a listing of prolotherapists. A fulltime prolotherapist is the best bet when trying to find a skilled practitioner.

Summary

Prolotherapy is a proven treatment for chronic pain, that has the potential for 100 percent alleviation in the majority of cases. It is safe and nontoxic. Prolotherapy can very easily be cheaper than recurrent expenses of pain medication, which will not provide anywhere near the results that prolotherapy can. Prolotherapy is best done when performed by a skilled prolotherapist. Be on the lookout for uneducated prolotherapists. It is safest to find a doctor who does prolotherapy fulltime.

This series really only scratches the surface of chronic pain treatment with prolotherapy. There are so many other factors that are involved like diet, hormones, infection, supplements, nutrition, and other forms of prolotherapy such as prolozone.

Please read the disclaimer at the bottom of the page. This is not medical advice, and is for informational purposes only. It is up to you, the reader, to verify any and all claims in this series of posts. I actively encourage you to do so. Patients are the number one advocate of prolotherapy. Especially share this with people you know who are suffering from chronic pain.
